A brisk wind pulled through the trees, making them curl their branches back in a shiver. It was spring but it seemed the day had hit a cold spell.
However a content being blew past the blooming trees and brush, her hair bristled in the breeze, she had finally gained a wild animal's winter coat. An eye swiveled in It's socket to gaze back on her lush blanket. A proud smile krept acorss her mouth as she slowed to a brisk walk.
Her journey paused when she came to a fairly large clearing, almost looking man made the way the trees surrounded the area.
Yes, man, how could she forget them? Of course being as pure as her lines were she was never born a wild ranging mustang. She was born and bred on a ranch. Still on the same side of the westerns parts as here.
Her smile grew wider at the re-callings. She was born on a rich wanna-be cowboy ranch that bred western saddlebreds, trying to breed hard-working aniamls but comfortable rides for the real working cow-folk.
A low snicker whispered from her. They truely weren't cow-people. How they never put up fencing all the way around their property. Their neighbors warned them of the rebellios wild stallions who entered the open ranches and stole their ready-to-go mares.
Her past human home was one of them. It was a cold night, colder then what she feeling now. She was a young five-year old mare at that time who was owned by the owner. A show-off horse she was used, her rich golden palomino coat impressed the young children but the adults only whispered they didn't a showey horse. Yet she was still able to presuade them.
It was that night after a show-case of the ranch and their horses that the latest young stealer came along. He was a strapping young stallion, only just kicked out of the herd for his trying ot take the lead.
He came across Autumn Sonnet, her coat stickjing out in the dark. Her dark eyes whatched him in awe. She had heard the wild horses late int he distance but never thought one would come up so close, without halter, nor any type of constriant of human-kind.
He was captivated by her and the other mare's she was residing with in that pen. Somehow he had managed to break down the thick fencing, nipping and herding the fewq mares there. The small gelding that was with them tried to follow but the young stallion only kicked him away.
And that was her first night out in the wild. The young stallion drove them far and wide, never stopping much to let the horses rest until he felt he was a safe distence away. They lived quietly in the small area he had brought them, leaving one night to return in the morning with a new-comer.
A real born-wild filly, just on the brink of becoming a mare. She was from a neighboring herd. Her herd stallion was busy fighting another rival when the small bands lead was able to snatch her up bringing her back.
Sonnet and her instintly became attached. Simplicity was her name, Sonnet was fascinated by her, the way she moved and talked, instintly won the stallion over and she led the herd in his place. The lead mare, Sonnet looked up upon her with eager awe and insperation.
By now, the stallion who was named Denago was a rancher's most wanted villian, he was constantly stealing mares from the local ranches. And many have ganged up to search him out int he wild.
By now it was nearing winter and many of the mares weren't taking the wild season change too headly. Many were raw on their feet from having been shod and pamperd by blacksmiths, colicing was a constant with most. They weren't used to the wild weather change, all of them had stalls and blankets by now. And other s died of pure exhaustion.
Sonnet however stuck with Somplicity and learned the ways of the wild. Though her first and second years were rough she pulled through. Simplicity taught her how to pick at the ice covered waters to gain drink, and what plants to eat and not. And how to pick her way through the terrian and fight back with a starving predator.
She loved the younger mare with all the knowledge with all her being.
Sonnets mind twisted back into reality, Simplicity wasn't here nor will she ever be, none of them would be. Anger and hurt rushed in her veins as she pushed through the brush putting herself in the large circle. Her black eyes narrowed...Simplicity would have said this would have been the worst place to place herself, perfect spot to get herself killed. She was prey out int he open and her killers could easily hide in the near-by trees.
She snorted, she didn't care, let them come. She needed to take her frustration and hurt out on something. Mean while she was going to feast on a well deserved meal.
Her head lowered and she bit rharshly at the stalky grass just to spit it back out again. It tasted horrible, acidy. But hunger drove her back down to take another bite and this time swallowed. She made a disgusted face as she took another bite.
